Air filters and COVID-19 Corona Virus
As we stay home and socially-distance in this COVID-19 pandemic, there is something else you can do to ‘flatten the curve.’ While hand-washing and keeping away from crowds are effective means of reducing the virus spread, there is the additional benefit of using the right air-filters. Can air filtrations keep me from contracting COVID-19? Air Filtration in HVAC ventilation, heating, and air conditioning systems are a part of the way we can limit exposure especially if it is a HEPA filtration system. Most systems will filter particles but do nothing for a virus floating in the air.
In fighting the coronavirus, I recommend placing portable air cleaners equipped with HEPA filters in rooms. Here’s the reason why: Whenever infected people sing, talk, cough, or even just breathe, they are releasing the coronavirus into our shared air. Even though the larger respiratory droplets will fall quickly, the much smaller aerosols droplets will remain in the shared air for up to 30 minutes until removed through either ventilation or captured by your air-purification system.
Science is clear. Portable Air filters with the HEPA high-efficiency filters and correctly sized for the room can successfully capture 99.97% of all airborne particles. In most typical homes, it takes about two or three hours for all the air to be exchanged. But employing an air purifier can accelerate the exchange rate up to six times per hour, totally cleaning the air every 10 minutes or so.
A good HEPA air purifier is going to cost you $200 to $300. Some of the models can be quieter and come with timers or remote controls. For the best results, place the air purifier in the center of your room, and make sure it is at least 3 feet from the walls or corners. Would also elevate on a table or stool. You will also need to place it on its highest setting. I am sorry to say it will be kinda noisy.
One more thing: Air purifier filters will capture the airborne particles, keeping them trapped. but they do not kill the virus particles. It is not really clear how long these trapped particles can stay active, so please be very cautious when you are replacing the filters. Wear your mask and goggles, and place the old filter into a garbage bag and immediately into your garbage can, then go and wash your hands.
You should no be surprised if you see air purifier companies claiming to have been independently examined by some prestigious laboratory or school. Though most of these are probably legitimate, many will be hyped by the manufacturers who are trying to differentiate themselves from the competition. For cleaning your air, what you need is a good-quality HEPA filter and a good fan. Click here for more details about virus air purifiers
